NetBIOS-Scanner

Introduction

NetBIOS (Network Basic Input Output System) is an interface specification for local networks. NetBIOS is needed to make the shared use of facilities (such as files and printers) possible. A commonly used resource hard drive or printer is called a "share".

A NetBIOS-cleared computer, which is directly connected to the internet, is an easy target for attackers. By using simple scanners, sharings of PCs connected to the internet can be found and used. Even a password-protected sharing can be hacked easily with the help of specially designed programs.

Countermeasures:

  • A further preventative measure: Windows 95/98/ ME PCs should avoid being attacked from the internet by: (One can differentiate between two procedures)

1.

The affected PC is not connected to another PC. There is no local network (intranet). In this case the file- and printer clearances should be completely deactivated. You should proceed as follows:

Click on Control Panel, then double-click on the "network" icon. Then click on the " file and printer sharing" button.

Now deactivate both the following menu items:
"Allow other users to access my files" and
"Allow other users to accuss my printer"

2.

The affected PC is connected to other PCs (printer and files are shared). In this case the file and printer sharing should be activated for the intranet, but deactivated for the internet. This is how you should proceed:

Click on Control Panel, then double-click on the "network" icon. A menu should open. Double-click on the entry "TCP/IP-> Dial-up Connections". Then change to the register "Connections" and deactivate the control box against "File and Printer sharing for Microsoft networks".

With these programs the user can:

  • Search the network for cleared lists and hard drives
  • Find out specific information (such as operating systems) about other internet-PCs
  • Crack passwords-protected clearances.

LANguard Network Scanner

The LANguard Network Scanner makes it very easy to search a network for clearances. The password of a protected clearance is easily found: simply use the right mouse-button to click on the command "Crack Password (Win9X)".

LANGuard Network Scanner is a highly recommended program.

PQWak

PQWak can crack the passwords of protected Windows 95/98/ME clearances. It exploits known mistakes. If the mistake has been remedied by a bugfix, then the program tries a clearance by means of a Brute-Force Attack.

Caution: Some virus scanners classify PQWak as dangerous. There is however no risk.
